Awards are generally bestowed by the Crown based on merit. Your rank and titles within the SCA are generally determined by the award(s) you hold.

Other awards are granted by Baronial coronets for orders formed within their branch. Many of these are for arts and sciences, service, or other easily categorizable distinctions. These awards are not generally the equivalent of any kingdom or society-level award and bear no title or badge.
