Drífa at lækjarmóti

From The Kingdom of Avacal Wiki

AKA Drífa at lækjamoti (No 'R') Pronunciation - Dreev-fa aat like-ya-moe-tee

Persona

My main persona (Drífa) is 10th Century west Icelandic. The second name "at lækjamoti" means "where the waters meet". I've fashioned this persona as a landowner/rancher/farmer and I've enjoyed trying some of the artistic skills she might have had like spinning, weaving, dyeing, carving, casting, wire work, nälbinding, etc.

Thus far, I've determined that Drífa is:

  • Icelandic-born
  • Her parents were originally from Norway, who came to Iceland from Norway approx. 910 CE. They live in the Haukadalur/Haukadalr Valley (Southern Iceland)
  • Living currently in approx. 950
  • Her home is very close to Hvítárvellir, which is about 20 km from modern-day Borgarnes. Hvítárvellir has a long history of being the area of well-established and prestigious farms. Hvítárvellir is known for excellent salmon fishing, and in Drífa's time is exceptionally good for markets, as ships can sail very far upstream.
  • Major incidents in her lifetime include the eruption of Eldgjá in 934 (or 954), a vent of the Katla volcano. She may have been around for the eruption of Hveravellir, which is listed at 950 +/- 50 years. This is quite far from the areas where my persona lives, but was one of the three largest eruptions in Iceland's history. The eruption of Ljósufjöll is listed at 960 +/- 10 years, so it might be just about to happen. This is very close to where my persona’s parents live, and fairly close to where my persona lives. These eruptions result in crop failures, and deaths of sheep and fish.
  • Although she has a Grant of Arms from the society... class structures in Iceland are very flat. She generally opts to simply be called Drífa, and doesn't include titles in her address (or her second name, unless there's another Drífa someone might confuse her with.)
  • Pagan, living alongside (reasonably peacefully) with Christians in an age before Iceland became officially Christian.

Considerably more about my persona is up on Dawn's Dress Diary including how I selected my name, where my persona is from, etc.

Heraldry

My heraldry is unregistered thus far due to a conflict with another participant in another kingdom. However I am using it as unregistered until I can come up with an alternative that will not conflict.

Preface indented counter-ermine Azure, four cheveronels braced Argent OR Preface indented counter-ermine Azure, three cheveronels braced Argent

I also have a badge I started using on some of my projects in 2023 which I have not yet blazoned. It is a rising sun over water.

Costuming

While my main persona is "Viking", and I've enjoyed building her a fully unrealistically large wardrobe - however I am also very enamoured with multiple costuming options, so also include research and crafting from other times/places. You might find me wearing:

  • Ancient Egyptian
  • Ancient Roman
  • 11th Century Finnish
  • 11th Century Byzantine
  • 15th Century Italian
  • 15th Century English
  • 15th Century Burgundian
  • 16th Century German
  • 16th Century Ottoman

There are also so many other times/places I want to explore as well!

Interests

Costuming, Millinery (hats), Documentation (blogging), Nälbinding, Trichinopoly, etc

Documentation

I maintain a blog, Dawn's Dress Diary where I demonstrate the projects I'm working on, my research, and finished projects as well as some event involvement. I also maintain my SCA Resume/CV on my website (which will be updated more than my wiki page). My blog is not exclusively about society projects, but also mundane projects I'm working on. I also post my work on my Facebook page, Dawn's Dress Diary, on Instagram under Sadina Dawn (which is much more mundane), and on Pinterest under Sadina Dawn as well. I no longer maintain a Twitter/X presence.
