Personae

Born in the Azuchi-Momoyama era, an unattached administrator named Keiran would find purpose in Edo, the new capital under the recently triumphant Tokugawa Shogunate. In 1600, the city was a swampy marshland, frequently flooded by the Tonegawa (Tone River). It would take incredible logistics to move a base of government, redefine the landscape of ancient rivers, and manage a growing, unsettled population in an era of unification after centuries of feudal warfare traditions. Keiran came to lend their skills with lofty goals of creating balance, harmony and prosperity in the new landscape.

Keiran chose their name, inspired by the 14th-century Tendai Buddhist compendium Keiran shūyōshū (Collection of Leaves Gathered by Storms in the Valley). Keiran meant for the name to evoke images of storms viewed from a distance; witnessing unpredictable nature in awe. Unfortunately, Keiran can also mean "chicken-egg," to which the populace Keiran served would lovingly adopt, especially upon seeing Keiran's frustration.

A student of philosophical thought, Keiran explored choice aspects of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Keiran aspired to be a junzi -- a Confucianist gentleman/worthy individual/sage -- which required an individual be self-aware, thoughtful, and pursuant of skills in the Six Arts, such as calligraphy; archery; and music.
