Resume
eSCA / VirtualSCAdian
During the Great Separation (Covid-19 Pandemic), groups around the known world were scrambling to find ways to stay connected through online resources. The VirtualSCAdian started as a repository of classes and online gatherings and quickly grew to a team of volunteer moderators and tech support, dedicated to assisting both groups and individuals find their footing in this new online world. Since March of 2020, the VirtualSCAdian team has advised, assisted, and stewarded events from small gatherings or meetings to known world symposiums for the kingdoms (and their branches within) of An Tir, Atenveldt, Avacal, Ealdormere, East, Midrealm, Northshield, Trimaris, and West.
As the pandemic abates and groups start focusing on in-person activities again, the VirtualSCAdian remains committed to assisting groups in maintaining online activities with a focus on accessibility and retaining the connections we all developed during the Great Separation. You can reach the team at VirtualSCAdian at gmail dot com.
eSCA Stewarding Roles - Events of Note
First Bardic War - May 2021
As Event Steward in Charge of Technology, Li Xia lead a team of over 80 volunteers to ensure that all zoom channels; classes, workshops, shenanigans, concert halls, etc; remained online for 24 hours a day, 9 days straight. The team also handled the livestreaming and video recording for all live performances. Li Xia advised the event stewards on security issues from a tech standpoint, recruited volunteers to the moderator team, handled their scheduling, provided zoom training, ensured almost 200 zoom links were created accurately, put out technical glitches as they cropped up, and almost never slept. An estimated 1,000 participants attended the event from all across the known world.
Virtu-L 12th Night - January 2021
This event was jointly hosted by the Barony of Montengarde in the Kingdom of Avacal and the Barony of Castel Rouge in the Kingdom of Northshield. This was jokingly due to Li Xia accidentally double booking herself and requesting the two Baronies work together so she didn't have double the workload. In reality, with eSCA effectively removing geographic barriers, groups were commonly finding themselves competing against events that previously were never on their populace's radar due to the great distances between them. Combining events just made sense, and this event was a successful experiment in building on the strengths of each individual group, learning about inter-kingdom anthropology, and navigating the bureaucratic differences across not only two branches, but two different kingdoms.
Kingdom of Avacal eTUA - June 2020
This is the event that started it all. With only three weeks notice, Li Xia and her team put together an online event with approximately 55 classes over 3 days, and the background administration of the event became the backbone template for all VirtualSCAdian events since. It is also the first event known to have participants attending from all 20 kingdoms!

Projects, Initiatives, and Administrative Roles
Age of Covid A&S Tournament
The Age of Covid A&S Tournament was created partway through the pandemic as a response to the ever increasing lament of "I haven't done ANYTHING!!" echoing across the known world. Its purpose was to help show people that although it felt like we were all stuck, that we were still creating; we were still engaged. It also set out to show the known world that despite being isolated from each other, the creativity and community of A&S was still strong and that amazing things were still being accomplished everywhere.
Entry to the tournament is simple, just send a photo of what you have been working on with a little blurb. No documentation required, your project didn't even have to be finished, or even a physical thing... all we wanted to see was what everyone was working on. Prize sponsors pledged to send small kudos (great job) tokens to their favourite entries, but there was no judging, no scoring, no "winners or losers".
As of October 2022, we are now into our third round with a cumulative total of over 70 entries and 25 prize sponsors. Li Xia and her team have pledged to continue running this tournament each spring and fall for as long as there is interest and engagement.

Fellowship of the Things
Li Xia is one of the founding members of the Fellowship of the Things, was first established in February of 2018. The Fellowship is not bound by any geographic or political boundaries (either mundane or SCAdian). We only ask people two questions: "Do you like to make things?" and "Do you like to give things?". If the answer to both of these questions is "yes", then congratulations; you are already a member of the Fellowship!
The Fellowship is connected by our love of making and gifting of all the things. As a community, we gift hundreds of pieces of largesse to royalty of all levels across the known world. Members are encouraged to share their love of creating and gifting with others and the Fellowship commonly hosts "Anyone Can Make Largesse" tables at in person events, providing people the opportunity to learn a new skill while contributing to local largesse.
They also have supported several kingdom fundraisers by pledging largesse to that kingdom in exchange for donations to that fundraiser. Most notably, the pledge to the West Kingdom raised $650 USD for the fundraiser to support victims of a wild fire in their kingdom. While this pledge committed us to making approximately 160 pieces of largesse, the members of the Fellowship overwhelmed and together donated well over 500 pieces to the Kingdom of the West... enough largesse that it was less expensive for Li Xia to fly to California to deliver in person than to pay for shipping all of the largesse to the various royalty of the Kingdom of the West.
In addition to making largesse, the Fellowship also supports education; not only in how to make all the things, but in helping to build awareness on the multi-faceted role that largesse plays in our game, and providing tips and support for good largesse etiquette to help ensure successful gifting of the things.

A&S Nights and Largesse Initiative
Since 2015, Li Xia has opened her home on a weekly basis for anyone interested in A&S of all kinds. Individuals are encouraged to request any projects or materials and if it was possible, Li Xia was committed to making it happen. Over the years, they have done everything from shaving a pig head in the backyard to operating a blowtorch in the kitchen. The group has provided site tokens and decorations for events, oodles of largesse across the known world, regalia for all levels of the SCA, and assisted people in learning all the things.
While Covid has limited the ability to meet as often in person, Li Xia remains committed to providing space for the creation of all things A&S as much as social distancing etiquette allows. Individuals are still welcome to come create and receive support on their projects, but A&S nights will remain informal and small until such time as it is appropriate to resume large formal gatherings again.

Class Descriptions (Alphabetical)
Chinese Papercutting Learn how to safely cut paper into intricate patterns. A very very brief discussion on the history of cut paper from around the world will be included. All materials, tools, and simple templates will be provided, but please feel free to bring: - your own design - tape (painter's tape preferred) - a hobby knife - spare blades - self healing cutting pad If you are unable to complete your design during class, tools are very inexpensive and can be obtained at most craft / hobby stores. You may also want to bring a book or folder or something else to sandwich your cut paper between to get it home safely.
FingerLoop Braiding, Beyond the Basics
This will be an informal class (no set time) that can be held whenever someone is interested, all day Saturday!
If you're interested, bring a pair of scissors and at least two colours of crochet cotton or other similar yarn / thread. If you don't have any, don't worry, we can share!
For those who have never done fingerloop braiding, join us!
For those who have and just want a refresher, join us!
For those who are experienced and want to see if I have different patterns, join us!
The sessions will be catered to the experience level of whomever is joining us.... Just come find Li Xia (or ask around for me).. I'll be camped out somewhere in the shade with random A&S projects to work on all weekend.
Rotational Symmetry in Islamic Illumination
This class is for ANYONE, not just scribes, who may be interested in how to make symmetrical designs for any project.
Materials / Tools Required: - sketching / plain / computer paper - tracing paper or onion skin - pencils / erasures - compass - protractor - ruler
The class will focus on how to create the designs, what you do with your designs is up to you! I have used the designs for greeting cards, wood-burning, block printing stamps, and more. Best part... NO DRAWING SKILL REQUIRED!
