==Event Highlights==
* A strong windstorm blew up briefly (on Saturday afternoon?). The event was christened "Toronation".
* [[Edward Ross]] received the [[Order of the Goutte de Sang]], and was recognized as a member of both the [[Order of Chivalry]] and the [[Order of the Laurel]], all on the same day.
* Duke Eirik Thorinsson won the Champion's Tourney to become the new Kingdom Heavy Champion.

==Personal Memories==

I travelled to the event with Duke Eirik and Countess Meagan (as she was then) and developed stomach flu along the way. [[Sunjan Temujin|Sunjan]] was sharing her felt Mongol tent with me, and I slept through most of the event. (Including, apparently the 'tornado'. I never felt it in the low ground-hugging steppe tent.) Duke Eirik became the new Kingdom Champion at that event. --[[User:Braidwood|Elizabeth Braidwood]] 14:42, 1 Aug 2006 (EDT)

The [Toronation] I remember best was in 1988, July Coronation, Red Deer, Canada.

Ralg and I were eating our dinner, when the wind changed and it got
cold very suddenly. He looked at the sky and said a very bad word.
We spent the next several minutes putting all our gear under cover
and adding extra guy ropes to our pavilion.

Then the winds struck - we spent the next undertermined amount of
time helping people lay down their tents so they wouldn't blow away.
There was a huge pavilion that was threatening to take flight, it
pulled a whole bunch of us across the field like we were windsurfing.
Some time later, it was all over. As we stood around, I realized
that I couldn't walk. We thought I had sprained my ankle, it turned
out later that I had broken a bone in my foot. Almost had to get
married on crutches.

The locals opened their homes and most of the camp went to spend the
night in town. Those of us who remained got together that night in
one of the Boy Scout group tents. The wounded sat in a circle while
the others provided us with drinks and munchies. The next morning
we all gathered in that tent for a progressive community breakfast.
It was great fun!

== Persona ==
Brangwayn was born in Wales, in 1502 in England, to a wealthy merchant. Through his trade with the Hanseatic League in Germany, he found a match for his youngest daughter, and in 1517, she was married to Hans, and moved to Leipzig. In Leipzig she studied at Leipzig University. In 1521, Hans joined the Landscknects to fight in the Italian Wars, and Brangwayn joined him in the Tross. She is currently still on campaign with him in Italy, in 1525. Her two children have been sent back to Leipzig to be fostered with their family.

== Persona ==
Peter was born in 1320, the youngest child of Hans and Hilde. Hans was the carpenter and leatherworker for the small town of Setzingen, in southern Germany. His other children included Fritz, Els, and Steffan. Peter and his brothers all learned the skills of their father, including basic reading and writing, however Fritz, as the eldest son, stood to inherit the shop from their father. This left Peter with few options for his future, but plenty of skills to rely on.

One day in the spring, in 1340, a knight, Ritter Thoman von Richthofen stopped at Hans’s shop, looking to get a new saddle made. Once the saddle was finished, Sir Thoman was overly happy with the work that was done, and inquired about Peter’s availability. He proposed to take Peter with him to France, and in return for his skills as a carpenter and leatherworker, Sir Thoman would train Peter how to fight, how to shoot a bow, how to hunt, and how to survive a battle.

In 1346, the knights of the Holy Roman Empire aided the English at the Battle of Crécy, a decisive English victory. Peter survived the battle as an archer, but Sir Thoman did not. Peter remained with the contingent of knights in northern France for the next couple years, but as stories of sickness and plague started spreading, they felt it was time to return home.

Finally, by early 1350 Peter was able to return to southern Germany and get back to his family home of Setzingen. When he returned it was to his dismay that Peter found his father’s shop abandoned. It had been boarded up and had the marks of warding against the Plague painted on the doors. Peter sought out his sister Els at the house of the man she had married. Els told him that their parents and both his brothers had died of the plague the previous summer.

Peter reopened his father’s shop, and settled in to a comfortable life.

== What is a Feast? ==

An event at which the main activity is the consumption of an elaborate meal, often accompanied by entertainment. A fest might also be an activity at an event where feasting is not the main, or only, focus. Many winter SCA events are feasts, as they are well suited to be held indoors at venues with kitchen facilities. Households will often have their own feasts, either as private events, or in their encampments at camping events.

Feasts can vary widely. Some can be small and intimate, some large and elaborate. They are often focused on period foods and recipes, many times following a theme or setting. They may be a modern food potluck. They can even not provide food at all, but be a bring-your-own-meal event, just providing a place to eat, and entertainment.

By and large, events that are primarily feasts will tend towards the more elaborate period affairs, with dedicated cooks and possibly even servers. Many have traditions of toasts, pre-feast games and activities, and local or even royal courts.

Some terms that are associated with feasts in particular:

== Feast Etiquette ==

*Many dedicated feasts are equivalent to fancy dinners, so it's an excellent opportunity to wear your best court garb, and put out your finest feast gear. However, this is never a requirement.

*Feasts require a lot of volunteer time and effort from the organizers, cooks, and servers. Please help as much as you can by assisting in set up, tear down, and clean up. With that in mind, be prepared to arrive early, or stay late, if you can.

*In particular many feasts are not equipped to allow all the participants to wash their dishes and feast gear. Please respect the rules of the feasts in this regard, and always be prepared to take your feast gear home dirty to be washed at home (a garbage bag is helpful here). Don't attempt to use the restrooms to wash feast gear.

*Do remember one of the prime rules of the SCA applies equally to feasts in rented halls as it does to camping - "Always leave the site cleaner than you found it".

*Always ask when choosing spots if they are free, if others have already reserved spots at that table.

*Be a good neighbor - don't neglect those next to you, even if they aren't in your group. A little polite, friendly conversation can go a long way to making new friends and welcoming newcomers. Don't feel affronted if they are disinclined to small talk either - not everyone is outgoing, and it's best to be friendly without being intrusive.

The Rose Petal is the Arts and Science award for the Barony of [[Montengarde]]. Awarded by the Baron and Baroness to those whose creative work in Montengarde has brought renown to the Barony and furthered A&S among the populace. Members of the Populace and members of the Order nominate new people to join the order.

== History ==

As the sum of the individual petals make up the whole of the Rose so too do the achievements of those who practice the various Arts and Sciences in creating the weave of the tapestry that is our Barony.
In recognition of their skill and accomplishments, [[Thorwulf and Sapphira]] Baron and Baroness of Montengarde, created in the seventeenth year of the Minotaur the Baronial Order of the Rose Petal to recognize excellence in the Arts and Sciences.

During the Reign of [[Malabar and Hero]], 7th [[Baron]] and [[Baroness]] of [[Montengarde]], they began calling the order forward to see the range of gentles who have been inducted into this order. Also for new members to see how many have gained this honour.

Peers are those gentles who are either "retired" royalty or members of one of the four Great Orders of the Society.

==Royal Peers==
Royal Peers are those who hold the rank of [[Viscount|Viscount/ess]], [[Count|Count/ess]] or [[Duke|Duke/Duchess]], indicating they have served as royalty and ruled either as Prince or Princess of a [[Principality]] or [[King]]/[[Queen]] of a [http://cunnan.sca.org.au/wiki/Kingdom kingdom].

==Peers of the Society==
Peers of the Society are the members of the [[Order of Chivalry]], the [[Order of the Laurel]], the [[Order of the Pelican]] and/or the [[Order of Defense]]. With the exception of Knights (part of the Order of Chivalry), who are addressed as "[[Sir]]", members of these orders are addressed as "[[Master and Mistress|Master]]" or "[[Master and Mistress|Mistress]]."

Peerages bestow a [[Patent of Arms]] and titles.

==Views of Peers==

Peers. The Orders of peerage are in a truly difficult position in
regards to the vast majority of the populace. Everywhere you look,
there's somebody wearing a white belt Knights in the [[Order of Chivalry]], a [[Pelican]] or a [[Order of the Laurel|Laurel]] medallion.

Let's take this from the perspective of a brand new participant in our
game. What do the Peers do?

The King and Queen get to give awards. They also get to deal with the
politics of the organization. They get to be in charge for six months
though so that's pretty cool.

Former Kings and Queens get a title and get to advise the current King
and Queen. Cool deal for them because it's got to be a royal pain to be
King and Queen; a title doesn't really pay back for all of the 3 a.m.
phone calls but nothing can. Getting to advise the Crown as part of the
[[Noble Estate]] is pretty cool and pretty important.

The [[Order of the Pelican|Pelicans]] make things work so the other stuff can happen. Not sure
if it's cool but it's necessary and making sure the necessary stuff
happens is important, even better when it happens in a way that nobody
can actually see. Having the operational side of the game take place
transparently enough that people can just show up and enjoy is pretty cool.

The [[Order of the Laurel|Laurels]] make things. Okay... So if they're really good at making
really good things, they get to become a Laurel. If they're really good
at something I have no understanding of and even less interest in, I'll
just take it on faith that the other Laurels as well as the Crown are
wise enough to come up with a way to compare 9th century Russ metal work
with 17th century English paper making. Still, if you know that much
about stuff, you get recognized for it and that's pretty cool. The
Kingdom gets nifty stuff.

The [[Order of Chivalry|Chivalry]] fight. Most of the time they're the only ones who get to
become King or Queen in their own right. (In An Tir anyway, other
kingdoms are fussy about this particular topic) So they fight. They
practice fighting. If you're interested in watching fighting, you get to
watch them fight. If you're not interested in watching fighting, they're
not terribly important except for the few of them that wind up being
King or Queen.

They're all supposed to be examples of courtesy, chivalry and endeavor.
They're supposed to be the benchmark from which everyone else is
measured.

As a non-peer old-old-timer, then: peers are recognized as such by the Crown
because each of them is in some way contributing notably to the function of
the kingdom and the SCA in the medievaloid game we play. Some of them are
contributing by their excellence in fighting skills. Some of them are
contributing by their research and re-creation. Some of them are
contributing by their service. All of them are *supposed* to be contributing
by setting a good example of courtesy and chivalry and honor and by teaching
whatever it is they do. And this is all *at the time they are recognized*.

It's *supposed to be* an ongoing job - in fact a peer promises to keep on
doing what got him/her the recognition in the first place - but there's not
much done to remove titles of lapsed or inactive peers. I suspect that this
is in part because a peerage is, despite the contrary assertions of most
peers, an honor, not just a job. One does not strip earned honors from the
honoree for lack of further contributions to the common good.

In the old days, peerages were the ultimate in SCA awards - so I was told,
then, by peers. Claiming that it was "recognition" came later, as did
discussions of Peer-Like Qualities that are supposedly, nowadays, a
sine-qua-non for being recognized as a peer. In the old days, one could be
decidedly a rough diamond in some respects and still one's service would
command the respect of a peerage. I even remember the first time I noticed
that it was changing: a lady whose accumulated service had reached the
levels where a Pel should have been imminent, but the then Crown refused to
do it, since she was lacking in [[PLQ|PLQs]] - specifically IIRC she had aggravated
them somehow, as her personality was rather abrasive, but the reason that
was given was phrased as ideals to be reached for, not personal pique. That
was in AS XVII. No, I wasn't at the council. But I heard about it from
someone who was, and was annoyed with the Crown because, abrasive or not,
she'd been working her heart out in service to the SCA for a long, long
time.

But to continue:

Since before I started playing in the Current Middle Ages, it's been considered bad form for peers to keep playing but stop contributing their efforts and examples. But as we work on the honor system (more or less), we depend on self-policing rather than trying to enforce it.

And one does not remove a Pelican from the Order because she has
disappeared. She may come back some day. One does not remove a Knight or a
Laurel from the Order because he died; that wreath is an honor, even when
the recipient is forever beyond being able to keep up with the attached
expectations of example and service.

Most of the time it does work for us. There are exceptions, but they are not
all that common.

Okey dokey. This is NOT the word from on high, the official word from
the BOD/Corpora/By-Laws or anything else. It's the word from Cairbre.

Peers are Thrifty, Healthy... oops

Peers do not Lie, Cheat or Steal and they don't tolerate... oops again

Peers are the catalysts that move the SCA into the future. They are the
people that know how to get an event done from start to finish. They
know how to make not only the next great King but they make it possible
for that infant in their mother's arms to be a great King someday. Peers
create the artisan who leaves everyone standing in awe and amazement and
more importantly, they make that same artisan into someone who themself
will stand in awe at a work of skill and effort.

Peers make sure others can learn. If you're a peer and you're not
either teaching or making sure people can be taught, please resign your
Peerage, you're a fraud.

I'm not saying you have to teach the classes yourself. I'm saying you
have to be able to make sure someone, somewhere is teaching the classes.
You may only be able to tell someone, "I'm not sure how to do that, call
Lord Wosname, he's really good at it and maybe he can teach you or at
least put you in touch with someone who can."

Peers play fair. They make sure their triple-peer buddy pays the same
fee to get into an event that everyone else does. They make sure others
know that it's okay to tell Duke Dis-en-dat that he's a Duke and that's
really cool but the site fee is still $15.00(US). They also know that
Real-Life(tm) happens and they've got enough experience and wisdom to
know that it can be okay to let someone work off their fees by sitting
the gate. But they apply the standards fairly.

Peers don't hurt the game for others for personal reasons. Peers don't
refuse to teach one person because they don't like them yet agree to
teach another because they're friends. If you can't handle the idea of
someone you dislike learning from you, you're not a Peer, you're just
another hypocrite with a title. I'm not saying Peers take people they
dislike into personal relationships such as Squires or Apprentices,
that's a personal agreement between two people, it's not a part of the
Society as a whole.

Peers remember that Apprentices, Squires, Proteges and whatever else
aren't part of the Society on that basis, they're personal retainers,
students and what have you. Peers also remember that how those personal
retainers interact with the Society at large is a part of the society.
Much like an arm or a leg. Nobody really cares what a Peer's leg is
doing in private but when that leg sticks out and trips old people, it's
a problem. If your squire trips old people, it's a problem. Peers also
remember that those people do create part of the game for others. Those
retainers carry banners into court and carry knowledge to others. They
help keep the peace and help send up the cries of joy when something
wonderful happens. In that sense, they are part of the Society.

Peers are blobs of grease and well worn bearings. They're what lets the
society operate. They're examples of what the game should be, not
necessarily what it is. They're the canvas on which the rest of us paint
the image of what the middle ages should have been.

It seems that I spend an awful lot of time harping on teaching and
educating. I do. When everything else is filtered out, that is the basis
of what a Peer is. They make sure others can learn how to make our game
fun. They don't have to do it all on their own but they do have to know
how to get it done.

Peers know the answer to the newbie's question and if they don't, they
know who can find the answer. Peers create resources so people can learn
everything from the perfect rising-snap to what forms you need to set up
merchants booths in a public park in Pierce County, Washington.

Here's where I get to the absolutes. Those things etched in stone and
as fundamental as the basic forces in modern physics.

A Peer nurtures and guides the Society into its next generation. They
do it to the best of their ability for as long as they claim membership
in one of the Peerages. Nobody made someone become a Peer, but when
someone took the oath to enter that Order, they made a solemn promise to
keep on doing what they've been doing. A Peer nurtures and guides the
Society to the best of their ability. It's a 24/7/365 responsibility. If
you can't accept that responsibility, you're not a Peer no matter what
title you've got.

Rhuddglyn Chronicle

During the reign of Nicholaus Barchatov and Alyssia of Cameo Keepe, 42nd King and Queen of the Kingdom of An Tir, The Honorable Lord Emeric and Lady Manyra returned to An Tir from their travels in Ealdormere. They settled in an uncharted part of the Principality of Avacal and immediately called out for others to join under the Lion and Gryphon banners. Banns were read that a meeting would be held at the library on August 22nd, AS 37 to learn about more these Current Middle Ages. People from all over the area gathered, listened and stepped forward to learn more. It was clear that much work was ahead to make a new shire but the new comers were eager and willing. These people would be the firm foundation for what would become the Shire of [[Rhuddglyn]] whose name means Red Valley.

A few months of classes and craft nights followed, when it was announced a tournament would be held in distant [[Myrgan Wood]]. The folks of Rhuddglyn donned their finest clothes (including Garrick in pink - opps sorry salmon- tudor!) and joined in the celebration at Myrgan Woods 23rd Anniversary on October 12th, AS 37. During the court of their Highnesses Ivar and Asney, the 13th Prince and Princess of Avacal, the group formally presented a rune inscribed stone to Their Excellencies Roaul and Roxanne, 3rd Baron and Baroness of Myrgan Wood, requesting their support and sponsorship. The appeal was graciously granted and a great friendship was forged between the two groups.

Months passed as the group enjoyed traveling to various events, making friends and learning skills. In February, 2003, the petition to become an incipient branch was sent to Their Majesties, Davin and Groa and to the Kingdom Seneschal, Viscountess Callista. The reply came back 3 month later on May 12th, complimenting our organization and welcoming us as a part of An Tir. Thus, we became an incipient shire in the kingdom of An Tir.

From the beginning the community around us was very welcoming. A local sword & leather merchant asked us to join him in a festival called Medieval Mayhem planned for May 30th AS 38. With displays of A&S, costume, fighting and even fire breathing, a good time was had by spectators and participants alike. In fact, the mayhem went on for 3 years since.

In June of the same year, our focus was taken up by our entry into the local parade taking place in July. The group built a beautiful float with a castle and an attacking Viking boat, gaining us first prize in our category. However, we will never forget the quick pace and following the horses in the parade line.

Soon after, messangers came down from Bordergate to tell us that a war was brewing. Four armies were gathering in Alfiemland for the ninth Annual Quad War. The shire excitedly packed up their tents and camp gear and made the trip the north (one should not mention the obstacles experienced by some on the way up there for fear it happens again).

Fighting under the Myrgan Wood banner, three new Rhuddglyn fighters, Cunan, Caius and Garrick and one veteran, Emeric, took the field on a calm sunny day. Alas, Myrgan wood lost the battles but everyone was in good spirits and ready to enjoy the evening revels. By the time the war was over, many new friends were made and Quad war took its place as the most anticipated event of the year.

Returning to our homes, we were asked by the local museum to do a demonstration in October during a feast. We not only offered to display our fighting skills but also to help serve the meal. Many people from the community were treated to a show of arms, dancing, and a reading from the norse sagas by Cunan.

That winter, preparations began for our first event: “A Night in Byzantium” which was held on March 13th AS 38, autocratted by Manyra. We found the hall, arranged the classes and planned the feast. The night before was cold and windy but the sun came out the next day as Rhuddglyn welcomed over eighty travelers to their hall. The classes were well-attended but the highlight was undoubtedly the simple but abundant feast which may be talked about for years to come.

Soon, the summer came and the group, in larger numbers, once again joined the battles at Quad War IX, now known as the wet war. Despite the rain the war was well-fought and the festivities enjoyed.

In October, Rhuddglyners traveled to celebration of Myrgan Wood’s Silver Anniversary. We had the honour of being inducted as a group to the Blood of the Wood by Baron Raoul and Baroness Roxanne. We also witnessed the investing Ferghail and Catriona, the fifth Baron and Baroness of Myrgan Wood.

Rhuddglyn then held its second event, Feast of Avalon autocratted by Jocatta and Magy, on September 17, AS 40 where they were pleased to host Her Highness Ifathayo, Princess of Avacal, and Their Excellencies Ferghail and Catriona, Baron and Baroness of Mygan Wood. It was an enjoyable day of games and tournaments, successfully finished off with another memorable night of feasting.

Preparations were also fully underway to apply for full shire status. The name Rhuddglyn and the device were registered with the College of Heralds in May AS 40 and a petition for elevation was sent to Their Majesties, Skepti and Taisiia in June.

That request was granted at the July Coronation of Their Majesties, Uther and Angharad and a date for the ceremony set for Avacal Coronet November 26th, AS 40.

November Coronet was held in a rural hall in Borealis on a beautiful fall-like day. Eight Members made the trip north looking splendid in their best court garb. We spent much time with our friends and watched as Myrgan Wood's Kvigr and Shunzei were invested as new heirs to the Gyphon Thrones. Much more happened that day as the visit by Their Royal Majesties of An Tir, Uther and Angharad made for much business during court: two new baronial couples were invested; Vik and Inga for the newly reinstated Barony of Borealis and Deitrick and Helene for Myrgan Wood. Rhuddglyn presented their scroll and were welcomed as a part of An Tir in evening court. Then, the group relaxed and delighted in a job well done. It was at this time that TRM choose to induct Manyra in the [[Order of the Pelican]].

Rhuddglyn had grown much in 10 years. Still counting 10 people from the original meeting, the group has increased to over 25 members, all of whom served countless hours for the shire and elsewhere.

The Order of the Sable Drum is an award for the Barony of [[Montengarde]]. Created in Anno Societatis 52 by [[Brangwayn Hessen and Peter von Setzingen]] to recognise those who have entertained their Barony well and furthered our word fame through acting, storytelling, wordsmithing, song and other skills.

Gryphon's Fury

:1995/AS 29 - 30 (from the [[Montengarde]] Page Thanks to the tireless efforts of [[Derek the Exile]] and [[Thorwulf Bjornsson]], Montengarde joins with the Barony of Sentinels Keep in the Kingdom of Artemisia to host the 1st [[Gryphon's Fury]]. This event will become the premier fighting event in the region. It is a war fought in celebration of the founding principles of combat within the SCA. There are no war points, instead one lucky(?) individual gets bestowed with the honour of the embalmed Gryphon and serves a year as the events "official ambassador".

The officer in charge of hospitality, and greeting and helping newcomers.

Chatelaines welcome new people to the organization, bring new members and help them become active contributors and help them get started in various ways. There are no requirements for joining except a good attitude and a willingness to participate within the organization's time period.

The Chatelaine's office in the SCA is responsible for providing an introduction to the Current Middle Ages to new or prospective members; for advising newcomers of the conventions of the Society, their Kingdom and branch; and for encouraging participation in the group. The chatelaine can provide access to educational information such as handouts, booklets and other materials. In all of these activities, the chatelaine's main charge is to represent the S.C.A. accurately and favorably, and to encourage all members to do likewise.

Avantgarde

The Avantgarde is the news letter for the Kingdom of [[Avacal]].

The first editions were published in AS 18/1984 and named "Voice in the Wilderness." When this area was deemed a region, they created the "Un-named Regional Newsletter" in Winter AS 20/1985 with Lady Rianna Von Heiniken and Lord Karl Von Saxon as [http://avacal.org/wiki/index.php?title=Chronicler Chronicers]. It included recipes and instructions for games (such as Gleek).

Once the region selected the name Avacal the newsletter became the "Avacal Regional Newsletter" in A.S 20/1990 and was published quarterly. The editors then held a contest in December AS XXV for a final name and ever since the Summer XXVI(1991) the newsletter has been called the Avantgarde (suggested by HL Sgt. Edward de Wolde from Valley Wold.)

The Avantgarde has been nominated 7 times for the William Blackfox Awards.

Kingdom Champion is a term to describe the Champions in the various activities, who are officers of the Royal Court. They are required to attend Crown Events to attend to the Crown in court, unless excused. They can be recognized by their cloaks, garb and implements of office, which feature the Arms of Avacal or the griffon rampant.
