The '''[http://www.westkingdom.org/ Kingdom of the West]''' is An Tir's parent Kingdom. That is, the Kingdom of An Tir was once the [[Principality of An Tir]], a branch of the Kingdom of the West.

As a [[principality]], An Tir grew and adopted much of the culture from our mother kingdom. For example, many of our awards are based on Western awards:

* [[Muckin' Tall Maul]] was based on the West's Muckin' Great Clubbe
* [[Old Shattered Shield]] also, possibly related to the West's Old Battered Helm
* [[Order of the Grey Goose Shaft]] started in the West in 1980, and while now closed there, still continues here.
* [[Forget-me-not]] seem to be based on the Queen's Cypher award in the West.

Originally, like the West, the Principality of An Tir had three Coronet Tourneys a year, until [[Ulfred Drommefjell| Prince Ulfred I]] changed it to two to be more in line with the Pacific Northwest weather, with a coronet tourney at the start and at the end of summer.

While we were a principality, for a short time we were the "capital" of the West Kingdom when [[Steingrim Wulfaresson Stallari|Duke Steingrim Stallari]] and [[Lenora di Felicie| Duchess Lenora di Felicie]] were King and Queen of the West. They are the only An Tirians to do so, while residing in An Tir.

An Tir separated from the Kingdom of the West in AS 16. King Radnor and Queen Esmeralda crowned our first king and queen, [[Manfred and Morag|Manfred I and Morag]] on January 16, 1982.

Even 24+ years after becoming its own kingdom, An Tir still retains close ties to the West Kingdom. [[An_Tir-West_War]] is a yearly war between An Tir and the West that is held over the Fourth of July weekend somewhere on the An Tir and West border lands.

In AS XL, An Tir found itself drawn even closer to the West, when [[Uther and Angharad|Duke Uther]] reigned as King.

Gentlefolk are generally addressed by the title of their highest rank. Titles should not be "stacked" -- that is, you shouldn't use multiple titles when referring to a single person.

GOOD: "There goes Sir Joe, [[Baron]] of BigCity."<br>
BAD: "There goes [[Baron]] [[Sir]] Joe."

When a person is entitled to use more than one title, allow the circumstances to dictate which one gets used. If Sir Joe is also a member of the [[Order of the Laurel]] ("Master"), [[Baron]] of BigCity, and has been King once ("[[Count]]"), he could legitimately be called any one of the following:

* Sir Joe (on the fighting field)
* Master Joe (while teaching)
* Count Joe (when being announced into [[Court]])

==Squires and Sergeants==

The terms sergeant, squire, protégé, apprentice, arcuarius, sergeant, courtier, yeoman and gallant describe various flavours of fealty relationships. These terms are
not titles and it's not appropriate to use them before a name.

If you want to mention that
someone is a squire/protégé/apprentice or sergeant/courtier/yeoman/gallant
you should say who they are in fealty to.

==No awards==

Any gentle of any rank in the Society may be properly addressed as "my lord/milord" or "my lady/milady". This is especially useful if you don't know their rank. No gentle who bears awards or honours of any type should ever chastise another for using this form of address; better by far to explain the correct form of address, either for themself or a third party.

Examples:
* "Good day, milord."
* "My lady, you've dropped your handkerchief."
* "Milady Mary, come quick!"
* "My lord Joe is waterbearing."

Can sometimes be combined with someone's office or position:
* "Milord Cook, your feast was marvellous!"
* "Milady Herald, the King calls for you."

==Award of Arms==

Entitles the recipient to style him or herself "Lord" (note capital) or "Lady." They are properly addressed as "Lord (name)" or "Lady (name)." See also: [[Award of Arms]]

Examples:

* "Would you ask Lady Mary if she has a large wooden spoon we can borrow?"

==Grant of Arms==

Title: The holders of Grants of Arms may style themselves ''Lord'' or ''Lady'', or in some areas, ''The Honourable Lord'' or ''The Honourable Lady.'' They may be addressed as ''Your Lordship'' or ''Your Ladyship.'' When referring to a person who has a Grant of Arms, you should use ''Lord/the Honourable Lord'' or ''Lady/the Honourable Lady'' instead of ''His/Her Lord/Ladyship.'' See also: [[Grant of Arms]]

Examples:

Some other kingdoms apparently use ''The Honourable Joe'' or ''The Honourable Mary'' (without the Lord/Lady), but this does not appear to be the case in An Tir. Some research by Ursula Georges did find historical examples of this, in written form: ''The OED tells me that Shakespeare's Venus & Adonis was dedicated,'' To the Right Honorable Henrie Wriothesley, Earle of Southampton, and Baron of Titchfield. The abbreviation '''HL''' is often used incorrectly as part of a signature: "HL Betty Boop". The correct form would be "The Honourable Lady Betty Boop".

==Barons and Baronesses==

[[Baron|Barons and Baronesses]] come in two flavours: Court and Landed. Court Baronies are an honour granted by the Crown, while Landed Baronies represent and are responsible for a [[Barony]].

Both may use the title "Baron" or "Baroness" in front of their names. When you talk to them directly, they may be addressed as "Your Excellency". When you talk about them, they may be called "Baron Joe/Baroness Mary" or "His/Her Excellency".

Landed Barons and Baronesses: (Baron/ess of a barony) may also properly be addressed and referred to as "Baron/ess of [branch name]".

==Patent of Arms==

The holders of Patents of Arms are considered Peers. They may be subdivided into two categories: [[Royal Peers]], which are those gentles who have held royal rank at least once, and Peers of the Society, who are members of one of the four Great Orders.

The titles involved can be many and varied. When in doubt, don't forget that "My lord" and "My lady" are perfectly acceptable titles for anyone.

Royal Peers are those who:
* Have reigned at least once as Prince or Princess of a Principality. Their title is [[Viscount|Viscount/Viscountess]], and they are addressed as "Your Excellency".

Sometimes just "Your Majesty" is used less formally.
* The heirs to the throne, the Crown Prince and Princess. They are referred to as "The Coronet", "Their Highnesses" (singly "Your Highness") or "Their Royal Highnesses" (singly "Your Highness").
* The reigning Prince and Princess of a principality. They are referred to as "Their Highnesses" (singly "Your Highness").
* The heirs to the principality thrones/coronet. They are addressed as "Your Excellencies" (singly "Your Excellency"), and in An Tir are known as the Tanist and ban-Tanist, or Tanist and Tanista, depending on the principality.

Note that sometimes regional descriptors are used when referring to royalty, to uniquely identify them when confusion might otherwise arise. For example, the Prince and Princess of the Summits are known as "Their Alpine Highnesses". A King of Ealdormere would be "Your Lupine Majesty". In An Tir, "The Sable Lion Thrones" is sometimes used to refer to the crown in the third person. Ciaran AEstel reported that "Some past scroll texts refer The Sable Lion and Lioness, but we haven't generally used regional descriptors for the Kingdom."

On other Kingdoms, it is sometimes a custom for those who have sworn fealty to The Crown to use "My Liege" in place of "Your Royal Majesty", but this does not seem to be a custom of An Tir.

== What is a Feast? ==

An event at which the main activity is the consumption of an elaborate meal, often accompanied by entertainment. A fest might also be an activity at an event where feasting is not the main, or only, focus. Many winter SCA events are feasts, as they are well suited to be held indoors at venues with kitchen facilities. Households will often have their own feasts, either as private events, or in their encampments at camping events.

Feasts can vary widely. Some can be small and intimate, some large and elaborate. They are often focused on period foods and recipes, many times following a theme or setting. They may be a modern food potluck. They can even not provide food at all, but be a bring-your-own-meal event, just providing a place to eat, and entertainment.

By and large, events that are primarily feasts will tend towards the more elaborate period affairs, with dedicated cooks and possibly even servers. Many have traditions of toasts, pre-feast games and activities, and local or even royal courts.

== Feast Etiquette ==

*Many dedicated feasts are equivalent to fancy dinners, so it's an excellent opportunity to wear your best court garb, and put out your finest feast gear. However, this is never a requirement.

*Feasts require a lot of volunteer time and effort from the organizers, cooks, and servers. Please help as much as you can by assisting in set up, tear down, and clean up. With that in mind, be prepared to arrive early, or stay late, if you can.

*In particular many feasts are not equipped to allow all the participants to wash their dishes and feast gear. Please respect the rules of the feasts in this regard, and always be prepared to take your feast gear home dirty to be washed at home (a garbage bag is helpful here). Don't attempt to use the restrooms to wash feast gear.

*Do remember one of the prime rules of the SCA applies equally to feasts in rented halls as it does to camping - "Always leave the site cleaner than you found it".

*Always ask when choosing spots if they are free, if others have already reserved spots at that table.

*Be a good neighbor - don't neglect those next to you, even if they aren't in your group. A little polite, friendly conversation can go a long way to making new friends and welcoming newcomers. Don't feel affronted if they are disinclined to small talk either - not everyone is outgoing, and it's best to be friendly without being intrusive.

Order of Defense

The '''Order of Defense''' is a [[Society]]-wide order. It is one of the four major [[peers|peerages]]. Holders of this award are recognized for significant skills in rapier and/or cut and thrust combat.

Awarded by the [[Crown]], the order bestows a [[Patent of Arms]] and the members are titled "[[Master and Mistress|Master]]" or "[[Master and Mistress|Mistress]]" or other ethnic or linguistic variation. In addition, they are entitled to wear a badge of (tinctureless) three rapiers in pall inverted tips crossed, on a white livery collar. Because this peerage was newly created in 2015, a common term for [[associate]]s has not yet evolved in the Society. In the East Kingdom, the Masters of Defense have taken to calling their associates "Provosts" in keeping with the practices of the London Masters of Defense, and marking them with a blue livery collar.

Broadly, an [[SCA]] household is a group of people who are friends who gather together for mutual support or interest.

Typically, a household will hang around together at day events and camp together at camping events. There can be as few as two members or as many as several hundred. They might call themselves a household, a ship, or a clan.

As is customary in [[An Tir]], those of Ducal rank ([[Duke]] or [[Duchess]]) may create for themselves a Ducal Household of [[retinue]] (personal herald, [[guard]], ladies-in-waiting, etc.) which are recognized by the [[Crown]]. All those of Ducal rank may hold Ducal Audiences or Courts. They may not grant any [[awards]], but they may give tokens and scrolls of praise and recognition.

Households don't have any official status in the [[SCA]]. You don't have to get anyone's permission to form one. Households come and go. They are a natural and recognized part of [[SCA]] life.

Dukes and Duchesses are gentles who have ruled at least twice over a kingdom.

They are addressed as "Your Grace" and referred to in the third person as "Duke/Duchess [personal name]." They may wear a [[circlet]] embellished with strawberry leaves to indicate their rank.

As former royalty, they have a [[Patent of Arms]] and are considered [[Peer|Royal Peers]]. In the order of precedence, they rank just below those bestowed with a [[Lion of An Tir]], and just above [[Count / Countess|Counts and Countesses]].

All those of Ducal rank (Duke or Duchess or their equivalents) may create for themselves a Ducal retinue (personal herald, guard, ladies in waiting, etc.), which will be recognized by the Crown and may hold Ducal Audiences or Courts. They may not grant any awards, but they may give tokens and scrolls of praise and recognition.

Like all SCA titles, alternate language version exist - I have heard Dux and Jarl used locally.

==Retinue Defined==

A retinue is a crew of people who take care of the King and Queen, Prince and Princess, or Baron and Baroness during their reign, providing personal support and care both at home and at events so that the King and Queen (or other representatives) are free to perform their duties.

In the case of the King and Queen/Prince and Princess, they are referred to as '''Royal Retinue'''. For a Baron and Baroness, '''Baronial Retinue'''.

This care and support may take the form of setting up and breaking down camp, organizing court, taking notes at meetings, fetching and carrying, minding children, delivering messages, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and more.

==How Retinue are Selected==

The members of a retinue are chosen by the couple.

Usually the retinue is composed of people who the royal or baronial couple know and trust to be hard working, reliable and discreet. Being on retinue is hard work. Think of it as being the stage crew for a major theatrical performance. They do the majority of the work behind the scenes that make court flow smoothly and efficiently. A good retinue can make the royal or baronial couple look great. A lazy or ill-prepared retinue can really make court slow, boring and, frankly, not worth going to. Each reign is different and each set of royalty or representatives handles its retinue differently. The Head Lady-in-Waiting is like the stage director and tries to be at all events that the royal or baronial couple go to.

The Crown (or other representative) is not required to use the same people; however, there is often a "core" of retinue that is known to be reliable and experienced. That is why
you often see the same people up there through multiple reigns. The other people that you see behind the thrones (in royal court) are heralds and attendants for any Prince/ess, Baron/ess that are there. Again, there is often a core group so you will see the same people often.

Many Crowns have Royal Counsel/Advisers to help them. Generally these people are former Royalty or former Kingdom officers and are very experienced with the nuances and politics of ruling. The advisers are more or less "sounding boards" to talk to about issues and get points of view from before They make decisions. There is sometimes a Royal councilor and that person does basically the same thing but is listed as a contact person.

Generally there is a Head Lady in Waiting to wrangle the attendants behind the thrones for both the King & Queen. There is also generally a Captain of the Guard to wrangle the guards who provide muscle and ceremonial "protection". The guards are often the people that put up the royal pavilion, thrones, unload the trailer and handle any other brute force needs. Sometimes there are separate King's and Queen's guards, but just as often it is one group.

==Retinue Positions==

A retinue usually consists of the following, but is not limited to these positions:

* Head lady in waiting - Stage manager of the reign, to wrangle the attendants behind the thrones.
* A group of ladies in waiting (usually at least eight for royals) - Stage hands (a lot of work)
* Captain of the Queens/Princesses/Baronesses guard (In charge of heavy lifting and sets the schedule for guardsmen to escort the queen)
* The Queens/Princesses/Baronesses Guard (once again at least 8 for royalty, usually the same number as ladies in waiting). They set up and take down the royal pavilion, escort the Queen outside of court and answer challenges in the Queen's name.
* Chief Scribe - This person usually takes notes at court of gifts received, awards given and other business that may require other work after court is completed.
* Other scribes - These can be ladies in waiting. They fill in charters and organize the scrolls for presentation.
* Personal Herald - Usually this is the Vox Leonis herald, but some royalty/representatives have personal favorites to run court from a heraldic standpoint.

There are more, but you get the point. It takes a LOT of people to get court running and flowing smoothly. Principalities and especially Baronies tend to have a smaller retinue, and may omit some, or many positions.

There are also the kingdom/principality/baronial champions (as appropriate) standing in court to serve. Yes, there are a lot of people up there.

==Volunteering for Retinue==

You see a lot of the same people up there from reign to reign because they are tested and tried in running a court. If you are interested in doing this, approach your local baroness or princess and ask if you can volunteer. As you get known for being a hard working person, your name will get known and, trust me, you WILL get grabbed to do the job. As the saying goes "Good help is hard to find" and when it is found, it gets picked up quickly!

Doing retinue can mean attending more events than you may be used to, as retinue is generally required at every event the Crown attends (or their representatives for Principality/Baronial) - which will be a lot. Ideally, retinues should consist of significantly more people than needed to allow for rotation of attendance duties.

Mercenary

Historically, a mercenary is a professional soldier for hire, serving whatever lord or army decides to pay them. Many examples existed in period - The Free Companies, the Italian condottieri, John Hawkwood and the White Company, Roger de Flo and the Catalan Grand Company, the Swiss Guard, the Varangian Guard - and these are but a few examples.

In the SCA, a mercenary is a person or group that offers themselves out as fighters for pay, and typically don't have allegiance to a particular barony/local group - possibly even hiring out to other kingdoms. Rather than hiring out for money, the typical pay for a mercenary household may vary. Meals, dance performances, coin of the realm (cookies), beer or other drink, baubles, and even poems have all been used to hire SCA mercenaries. Like most other fighters, their main desire is to fight in wars for the joy of it - the pay is a bonus, and is not necessarily required.

Also paralleling history, complications can arise when members of a mercenary group or household are in some form of fealty - knights, champions, personal fealty, and so forth. This may cause individuals to end up on the opposite side of their company.

Another parallel is that some hold a negative view of mercenaries in the SCA. The SCA is a volunteer driven organization, and the idea of doing something "for pay", may rankle. Additionally, many gentles are deeply involved, and loyal, to their local group (shire, barony, etc.), and may feel those without such loyalties are problematic. A '''Crown Event''' is one of the events where royalty are either chosen (Crown Tournaments) or invested (Coronations). The Crown Events in An Tir are: [[Twelfth Night Coronation]], [[May Crown Tournament]], [[July Coronation]] and [[September Crown Tournament]].

No other events in the Kingdom may be held on the same weekend as a Crown Event.

Crown Events are normally some of the largest events in the Kingdom. They are where the many of the various [[Kingdom Champion]]ship tournaments are held. They feature court, tournaments, dancing, feasts, merchants, archery, thrown weapon - almost any kind of activity that occurs in the Kingdom is likely to be found at one crown event or another. They often have [[peer]]age vigils, and always have meetings of the [[polling orders]] and the [[Noble Estate]].

==History==
For the first years of its existence, the Principality of An Tir followed its parent kingdom's lead and had three reigns per year. Additionally, the Coronet Tournament and Coronet Investiture were held at the same event. As someone was heard to say, "Arrive a nobody, go home Prince." The combination Tournament and Investiture events were held in late August or early Sept, early March, and mid- to late-June. The last combination event was held on 28 June X/1975.

Beginning in Oct X/1975, the Coronet event calendar was adjusted to six events per year, separating the Coronet Tournament from the Investiture. The first stand-alone Coronet Tournament took place on 18 Oct X/1975 followed by An Tir's first Twelfth Night Investiture on 3 Jan X/1976.

The [Toronation] I remember best was in 1988, July Coronation, Red Deer, Canada.

Ralg and I were eating our dinner, when the wind changed and it got
cold very suddenly. He looked at the sky and said a very bad word.
We spent the next several minutes putting all our gear under cover
and adding extra guy ropes to our pavilion.

Then the winds struck - we spent the next undertermined amount of
time helping people lay down their tents so they wouldn't blow away.
There was a huge pavilion that was threatening to take flight, it
pulled a whole bunch of us across the field like we were windsurfing.
Some time later, it was all over. As we stood around, I realized
that I couldn't walk. We thought I had sprained my ankle, it turned
out later that I had broken a bone in my foot. Almost had to get
married on crutches.

The locals opened their homes and most of the camp went to spend the
night in town. Those of us who remained got together that night in
one of the Boy Scout group tents. The wounded sat in a circle while
the others provided us with drinks and munchies. The next morning
we all gathered in that tent for a progressive community breakfast.
It was great fun!

Don't remember anything else about the event....

A Polling order is any order that makes recommendations to the [[Crown]] via group meetings and discussion. Potential candidates - who may have been recommended to the order by the members of the populace - will be discussed by the current members in attendance. If enough member agree, they will be formally recommended to the sitting [[King]] and [[Queen]] to be added to the order.

Note that the King and Queen are not obliged to act on a recommendation - their word is law, after all - although it's fairly rare for them not to. They may also decide to award membership into a pooling order without waiting the order's recommendation, but again, this is rare as it can cause conflict.

A merchant is a vendor that sells goods (or services) at SCA events, typically from a tent or booth. In general, these goods are specifically of interest to those attending - items of [[kit]], [[garb]], [[feast gear]], period specific history books, appropriate fabric, medieval or medievalish household goods, supplies for various society activities, and so on. Modern or other non-period items may also be for sale. Food merchants are also common, while the food may or may not be attempting to be period.

Some events may not have any merchants, others - especially Kingdom level events - tend to have a large [[Merchants' Row]]. Wandering merchants have also appeared. [[Demo]]s often feature a wider range of non-SCA specific merchants, and many SCA merchants sell at non-SCA events.

There are requirements to merchanting at an event, which may involve a fee, donation, and normally includes making a reservation with the [[autocrat]] or merchant-o-crat for the event.

==Households Defined==

Broadly, an [[SCA]] [[:Category:Household|household]] is a group of people who are friends who gather together for mutual support or interest.

Typically, a household will hang around together at day events and camp together at camping events. There can be as few as three members or as many as several hundred. They might call themselves a household, a ship, or a clan.

Households can vary just as much in focus as in size. They may just be a grouping of friends and/or family, or a peer and their students. A household might focus around a theme - like a nautical ship, 14th Century English, or non-European personnas. They might center around an activity or two, such as archery, a war band, partying, or service. They could be created for a specific area - a shire, barony, or the like, or perhaps they span many areas, or even many Kingdoms. Organization will vary significantly as well - there are no specific defined rules or required structures. Some households have almost none, while others may have detailed rules, traditions, officers, and so on - to the point of operating very similarly to an official SCA branch, without being one. Also, much like the people they are made up of, households may change over time.

==Ducal Households==

As is customary in [[An Tir]], those of Ducal rank ([[Duke]] or [[Duchess]]) may create for themselves a Ducal Household of [[retinue]] (personal herald, [[guard]], ladies-in-waiting, etc.) which are recognized by the [[Crown]]. All those of Ducal rank may hold Ducal Audiences or Courts. They may not grant any [[awards]], but they may give tokens and scrolls of praise and recognition.

==Unofficial Status==

Households don't have any official status in the [[SCA]]. You don't have to get anyone's permission to form one. Households come and go. They are a natural and recognized part of SCA life.

Despite this, you may find many references to households in official SCA publications. For example, event copy ("Gate volunteers supplied by House Grindstone"), and on the Order of Precedence - households can be, and have been, given awards.

== History ==

The Shire of Bitter End began in AS XVIII in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. The shire began with a poster in local game shops describing a formative meeting to start a new branch of the Society of Creative Anachronism.

The initial meeting was held by [[Conrad Von Gratz]], Tatanga Mani (later [[Douglas Cameron of Skye]]), [[Lochlana of Crownwood]], [[Rheanna Wheatenfeld]], and [[Morgan the Unknown]]. Local attendees included folks who would be later known as the House of the Fallen Keep.

The purpose for the formation was described as a alternate to the internecine politics of the two large groups in Alberta at that time. The motto "Absent thoughts for absent friends" was coined.

On July 31, AS 46 Gareth Haydon left Avacal to relocate to Lions Gate in Tir Righ, leaving many friends behind.

Gareth Haydon, also known as Gareth Stringbreaker, was born in the town of Carmarthen (Caerfyrddin) in the Kingdom of Deheubarth (south west Wales) in 1327 AD. He is the first son of the merchant Haydon Nash, and only surviving member of the family. As a youth he showed some aptitude for archery, and trained in the art while learning the merchants craft from his father. He earned the nickname ‘Stringbreaker’ for his unfortunate habit of breaking the strings on his bow, When the Black Death came to the town in 1348 Gareth was the only survivor of the plague among his family, and he had them all buried in the ‘plague pits’.

Gareth then left Deheubarth, traveling by boat to the east for many months, eventually coming to the ruins of the Persian Empire in the era between the last Ilkhan, Abu Sa’id, and the rise of Tamerlane. He went west by land through eastern Europe, and eventually, after many years, came back to the Isles. During his travels he studied archery with whatever teachers he could find, learning many secrets and ways of shooting. Upon his return to the west in 1364 he was noted for his foreign ideas and manner of dress.

Gareth Haydon has established himself in [[Avacal]]. He has wealth left by his father, and has become slightly known to the local nobility. He won an archery competition held by a local [[Barony]], and has gained some notoriety as a result. He was awarded noble status by the Prince and Princess, and has taken up teaching new archers, and preparing for the wars that all know are to come. He is completing a suit of armour to this end.

Gareth Haydon is a former Dragonblinder (Baronial Archery Champion) of [[Montengarde]], from July 22 AS 41/2006 through July 28 AS 42/2007. He was awarded an [[Award of Arms]] by Their Highnesses [[Steinn and Gemma]] on July 28 AS 42, and inducted into the Order of the Dragon (Order of former Champions of [[Montengarde]]) on the same day.

In October of AS 42/2007 Gareth became an Officer of the Barony of [[Montengarde]], taking the position of Captain of Archers. He also took up the duties of Avacal Target Deputy, recording the Royal Round scores of archers within Avacal. At the annual Quad War in AS 43, he was welcomed into the Order of the Golden Link, a Baronial Order for service. He has stepped down from the Captain of Archers office in Montengarde now, has stepped down as Avacal Target Deputy, and has moved on to Royal Archer Avacal.

On January 16th of AS 44/2010, Gareth Haydon had what His Highness Steinn of Avacal would describe as his "best day ever", being first entered into the [[Order of the Grey Goose Shaft]] by His Majesty Owain, and then awarded the Principality of Avacal service award, the Gilded Gryphon, from Their Highnesses [[Steinn and Gemma]].

In February of AS 44 Gareth traveled south to the Kingdom of [[Atenveldt]] to attend the 26th [[Estrella War]], and won the Archery Championship in a competition with over 100 target archers.

At Avacal [[June Coronet]] on June 5 AS 45, the Lady [[Alickina]] became Gareth's first Arcuarius. He took Lord [[Baeldric of Newt]] as Arcuarius at the Harvest Feast event at Bitter End in AS 45.

Gareth can most often be found in the company of [[James the Quixotic]], Her Excellency [[Morrigan Clubfoot]], and [[Dalton Arundel]], as well as archers from all areas on the range, and among good friends from many places.

There are three children in the House of Sionnach: Aiden, Rowan & Marissa.

== History ==

Orginally started in the SCA in [[Frozen Mountain]] in 1992.

Moved to [[Montengarde]] in 1994. Left the SCA in 1995.

Returned to the SCA in 2009 accompanied by his wife Taletta.

[[Ogedei]] Bahadur took Donnan as his Man-at-arms on the last night of his Vigil for Knighthood at [[Silverwolf]] in [[Borealis]] 2011 (AS XLVI).

Donnan is a Gallowglass warrior. He is a member of one of Norse-Gaelic clans of Scotland. He found himself on the wrong side during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the early 1300's, and left for Ireland with many of his clan’s mates to seek his fame and fortune as a mercenary.

Gate - sometimes previously referred to as "Troll Booth" - is the event entry and check-in point. This is where one goes to pay for entry for the event, or check-in if per-registered. Some event sites may have a separate gates for the site itself, or demos may have separate public and SCA entries. Things one can sometimes find at gate:

* Gate staff (known in the past as "trolls") taking payment, and administering the required waivers, sign-ins and forms.
* Site tokens (if in use) to show that payment has been made.
* Car ("dragon") passes, if in use, to make it easy to contact the owner if a vehicle needs to be moved.
* Maps of the site - may include locations of major groups and households.
* Message boards - sometimes available to leave messages for those checking in later
* Temporary parking for use while checking in.

Gate often needs volunteers for gate staff. They also often appreciates it if you donate some snacks to them, as they are generally stuck at gate for the duration of their shift(s). "Sitting gate", as the duty is called, is a fun way to meet many people as they enter the event.

The position of '''Grete Boke''' is a Lesser office under the jurisdiction of the greater office of [[Chronicler]]; the officer sees to the collection of, maintenance, organization and preservation of SCA History for their level. Therefore, holders of said office may be found at all levels including kingdom, principality and branches (baronies, shires, etc.). The position may also be known as ''Branch Grete Boke Officer'' or ''Branch Historian''¹.

The populace is encouraged to send the Grete Boke copies of articles, stories and photographs for inclusion in the history. It is recommended that copies of newsletters be sent to the Grete Boke. If the position is not filled, the responsibilities fall to that of the Chronicler.

== What is a waterbearer? ==

Waterbearing: Waterbearers help maintain the hydration of fighters and the populous by passing out water, gatorade, and or other hydrating food or snacks. Waterbearing is a great way to get involved in the SCA -- you don't need a lot of special training, and you get to meet new people while you help with the success of an event. Although the society does not recognize waterbearing as an official position, there are people who regularly participate as waterbearers and coordinate water activities at events.

In the Kingdom of An Tir we generaly practice "no touch" waterbearing where the lips of the person do not ever touch the container of water or gatorade. This is usually accomplished with "Sport" or "squirt" top caps on standard sized waterbottles. This is considered more sanitary as it reduces the risk of spreading illness.

At tournaments and wars, it will be common for there to be a waterbearing point - often marked by the [http://www.goldenstag.net/MiscSCA/officerbadges/waterbearers.gif following badge]: Argent, a goutte de larme within another voided, a bordure azure (basically a blue water drop). This is normally where one goes to volunteer for waterbearing. Even children - supervised, of course - can assist in most situations, and often find interacting with the fighters enjoyable. This is also normally the place to drop off donations of water or snacks.

The waterbearer in charge - that is, the person or people running waterbearing point, will be organizing volunteers. They often will be in charge of the supplies of water, water bottles, cleaning supplies, and so on. They may also be preparing snacks - typically pretzels, pickles, sliced or easily consumable fruit, or other finger food.

== What does field waterbearing involve? ==

The duty usually involves carrying waterbottles, Gatorade, and possibly snacks, to the fighters, marshals, list folk, and onlookers - basically anyone who might need water. Be sure to take some yourself. A few suggestions for waterbearing:
* Safety first. Don't enter areas where fighting is happening unless a hold is called, and you are instructed or expected to do so.
* Safety first. Be aware if arrows, thrown weapons, etc. are in use, and keep back to the same safe distance as the populace while they are in use.
* Safety first. Follow the directions of the marshals at all times.
* Be polite, but assertive. There's no need to be obnoxious, but many tired fighters may get "tunnel vision" and forget to drink - a gentle prodding may be needed.
* Ask their preference, if you are carrying both water and Gatorade. Many folks will specifically want one, and not the other.
* Don't ignore non-fighters. Many marshals, list folk, and onlookers may have been standing in the sun and require a drink as well.
* Don't ignore non-fighters. Don't forget to stay hydrated yourself.
* Don't ignore non-fighters. While the royals (and similar) should be well taken care of, sometimes some of their entourage may not have easy access to water. I have found offers of water to guards standing in the sun to be particularly welcome. Of course, don't get in the way of court or official business.
* Don't be intimated. While you should endeavor to be polite at all times, and remain unobtrusive, your job is important. It's generally OK to venture near (but not into) the [[Royal Presence]], or to walk up and down processional lines, if you are performing your duty.
* In line with being polite, if you stop to watch the fighting, try not to block the views of those already watching.
* It's OK to remind gentles about the "no touch" rule, should you see them making contact with their lips to the container. Be sure to clean the container.
* Processional line-ups at crown tournaments (or similar) often involve armored fighters standing in the sun. They '''will''' need water, even though fighting hasn't begun.
* During tournaments, areas that fighters go to report to the lists, or where they exit the list field, are excellent points to offer water to them.
* If you get tired, it's OK to take a break.

== Dehydration: ==

Symptoms of mild dehydration include thirst, decreased urine volume, abnormally dark urine, unexplained tiredness, irritability, lack of tears when crying, headache, dry mouth, dizziness when standing due to orthostatic hypotension, and in some cases insomnia. Other possible symptoms include cloudy urine and stinging during urination. Blood tests may show hyperalbuminemia. Mild dehydration also has been shown to negatively impact people’s moods. Experiments by the USDA's Agricultural Research Service has shown that dehydration is associated with confusion, fatigue, and negative moods.[9] Mild dehydration, which includes water losses between 1% and 2%, observed in the experiment are comparable to mild dehydration experienced by people in their everyday lives.

In moderate to severe dehydration, there may be no urine output at all. Other symptoms in these states include lethargy or extreme sleepiness, seizures, sunken fontanel (soft spot) in infants, fainting, and sunken eyes.

The symptoms become increasingly severe with greater water loss. One's heart and respiration rates begin to increase to compensate for decreased plasma volume and blood pressure, while body temperature may rise because of decreased sweating. At around 5% to 6% water loss, one may become groggy or sleepy, experience headaches or nausea, and may feel tingling in one's limbs (paresthesia). With 10% to 15% fluid loss, muscles may become spastic, skin may shrivel and wrinkle (decreased skin turgor), vision may dim, urination will be greatly reduced and may become painful, and delirium may begin. Losses greater than 15% are usually fatal.

An '''associate''' is a [[student]] who is in a formal squire, apprentice or protégé relationship with a [[peer]], usually with an exchange of [[fealty]].

Members of the [[Order of Chivalry]] take [[squire|squires]].

Members of the [[Order of the Pelican]] take [[protégé|protégés]].

Members of the [[Order of Defense]] do not yet have a defined name for their associates, but in they East, they are called "Provosts".

Being a fealty relationship, this involves some kind of contract,
devised and agreed on by the two concerned parties. This often takes the
form of the associate agreeing to take on whatever tasks his/her
master/mistress sets before him or her, and the master/mistress pledging
mentoring, sharing of knowledge and skills, and welcoming that associate
as one of his or her family.

Unlike associates, who may be made only by Peers, anyone, regardless of
personal rank, may take students.

[...] if you are in direct fealty to a Peer, that peer can swear
fealty to the Crown for both of you -- the fealty trickle-down effect.

The other facets may be a bit more subtle. A good part of a Peer's job is
to teach and guide their associates and give them lots of opportunities
to shine. This may or may not exist in a student relationship. Both Peers
and teachers like challenges, and to challenge themselves as well as
those they work with.

Fealty contracts can be made; they can also be broken by mutual agreement
to dissolve the relationship, or by one person not fulfilling their end
of the contract. It's important to note that contracts are reciprocal.
Contracts may also have time limits. In a fealty contract with me, you
become an important part of my family or household--you do your best
regarding your interests, you accept such tasks as are set before you as
are reasonable for you, and you uphold the honor of us both. For my part,
I challenge you, present you with opportunities to show your knowledge
and skills and invite others to partake of them, and uphold the honor of
us both. If you need protection, I am your shield; if you muck up, I
expect others to tell me FIRST so we can discuss and resolve the issue at

My laurel [Master Hector of the Black Height, Ealdormere] states that a peerage is the "crown's stamp of approval on an
individual taking on dependants for the purpose of guidance, mentorship and
mutual growth". Having a dependant is part of the job description of peers,
and being a dependant gives that person the knowledge that there is
someone they are accountable to and who is in their corner when the chips
are down.

Essentially, any of the bestowed peerages are expected to take dependants
and teach them. The [[Sumptuary Laws|coloured belts]] worn by Peers’ dependants signify bonds
between Peers and non-Peers.

I would not define any of the three dependants any differently, except in
the flavour of peer they are attached to. They are all engaged in a formal
mentorship relationship to some degree or another. That relationship is as
unique as the individuals in it, but the formality of the relationship is
recognized and respected by the Crown and the other members of the peerage.

I am somebody's protege. Sometimes, that relationship is on the back burner
because we are not romantic (though we are affectionate) and he lives a
bazillion miles away; if he suddenly said that he will never return to the
SCA, we would still be friends. And yes, the strength of our fealty is
equally matched by our friendship.

Sometimes that relationship is on the forefront--usually, when he wants me
to do something. Sometimes we have to talk our way through it, and
sometimes life gets in the way and I can't do what he wants, and sometimes
he has to invoke his feudal rights to remind me that I *can* do whatever is
needful. (That doesn't happen very often...) He is not omniscient, but he
does care about my growth and learning experiences.

When we gave each other our oaths before witnesses, we did so as equals, for
we have (even now!) much to learn and teach each other, and others.

When I do something *excellently well,* it reflects on him. Likewise, when
he does something fabulous, I get to be proud of him.

He is the peer. Lucky him--he gets to advise the Crown, advise his peers,
and attend meetings.

I am the peer-in-training. Lucky him--he gets to hear what *I* think the
Crown should be doing. In my capacity as protege, I am expected to think
and advise and listen and learn from my liege lord--he has to hear from me.
(And lucky me, I don't have any meetings...!)

While I could agree with you that there are some distinctly un-peerlike
behaviors occuring among the peerages, I am also the first to say that I
can't fix *it*.

Instead, I can point to myself, to my family, and even my peer and work on
those behaviors that would enhance those around me. I'm not talking about
peer-like qualities (a misnomer, and worthy of another post entirely). I am
talking about becoming a better woman, a better mother, a better friend.
This is well within my sphere of influence. I can teach, I can share, I can
do.

I'm not out to fix the world. I'm not even out to repair the kingdom. I
can leave a place better than I found it--even if it's picking up cigarette
butts off the ground. Or leaving a room.

What's an apprentice? What's a protege'? What's a squire?

How are they different from a student? From a man at arms? From that young
gentleman who's always there when you desperately need help setting up the
lists?

Please remember that this isn't the WORD FROM ON HIGH, this is the WORD
FROM CAIRBRE.

For simplicity's sake, I'm going to refer to proteges, squires and
apprentices as, "PSAs." (get over it, my other choice was, SAP and we all
know how that would have gone over... ;-} )

Is a PSA a student? Yep.

Is a student a PSA? Not necessarily.

The difference comes in the type of education being sought. Anyone who is
learning something from someone is a 'student.' That's one of those words
that's very hard to quibble about. You can use the word, "student", as a
proper noun and give them belts, baubles or important sounding titles, but
they will still be someone who's learning something from someone.

So what's a PSA then?

Glad you asked.

PSAs are students studying to become Peers. (ARGH!!! I can hear the
screams now...)

How many of you have heard something to the effect, "If someone is trying
to become a Laurel, they don't deserve to become one." Answer honestly. Go
ahead, the rest of us will wait.

A lot of us have heard that. A lot of us have heard that the earth was
flat too. They're both about as valid.

Very few people have any problems when someone decides they want to become
a Knight. Yet there's this bizarre pseudo-Victorian morality surrounding
the Pelicans and Laurels that makes people believe it's somehow impure or
unclean to deliberately strive to enter one of these orders. As I've said
before, "get over it."

The nature of the specific relationships between Peers and their PSAs are
as varied as the people involved. Some swear to keep the Knight's armor
clean and always follow him into battle. Other's promise to spend hours at
the bench cutting glass and making windows even to the extent of skipping
events if necessary. Still others promise to autocrat a zillion events and
hold an equal number of offices. The specifics of the oaths that define the
relationships aren't particularly important to anyone other than the Peer
and their prospective PSA. There can be fealties and homages, homages
without fealties, fealties without homages, simple business contracts (very
popular in period I might add, none of the silly 'My man is my Liege's man'
for those glassworks in Venice) Figure out what makes the two of you happy
and make that the covenant that binds one to teaching the other to become a
Peer.

What is important is the idea that these prospective PSAs are asking
someone in a specific position to teach the PSA everything needed to become
a peer to the Peer. More importantly, a peer to the Peerage.

Think about this again, a PSA is asking someone to teach them to become a
Peer of the Society for Creative Anachronism.

They are asking someone to teach them not only the specific skills germane
to the Peerage in question but to teach them all of the other things that
make up being a Peer. They're asking them to teach Peer Like Qualities.
They're asking to be taught to play enough Chess to show some familiarity
with period gaming and to do a Pavane if that's what the Queen asks for.
The difference in the curriculum is simple; PSAs are asking to take the
course work for the skills as well as the additional major in, "Peer Like
Qualities." Simple, no?

In period, the concepts of PSAism (PSAitude? PSAiferousness?) had very
little to do with how they're perceived in the modern SCA. Depending on
when and where in period, being a Squire might well be the highest station
someone could ever hope to attain. In other places, being a Knight wasn't
much to talk about because of all of the Lords and Ladies wandering around
the Court. (I'm using 'Knight' as a generic period term for our Peerage
orders)

An apprentice might well be literally sold into the household of a skilled
artisan and spend their entire life knowing they will never be a 'peer' of
the master. Depending on who the master had as their patron or sponsor,
that apprentice may well never even be allowed to have credit for works
that surpassed the master's greatest.

Why does someone want to become a PSA?

Nobody needs to be a squire to learn to fight. Nobody needs to be a Knight
to be a good fighter. Anybody who says you have to be a Knight to be the
best fighter ever is simply wrong. The same holds true for artisans and
craftsmen and the Laurels and the servants in regards to the Pelicans.

Nobody has to be a Knight to be King. Nobody has to be a Pelican to be the
Kingdom Seneschal. Nobody has to be a Laurel to be the Kingdom Minister of
Arts & Sciences. Anybody who tells you otherwise is desperately
misinformed.

A reasonable modern world analogy would be a Doctoral Candidate. They're
working to enter the highest realms of academia. They're not just learning
how to be a good engineer or a decent cosmologist, they're looking for a
mentor who can show them how to do fundamental research and then teach it
to the rest of the world.

Those of you who are martial artists, think about that person with their
3rd or 4th Dan who are spending their life's savings to go to Okinawa,
Korea, China or where ever to study with the Soke. They're learning to
become the person who will carry the tradition on to the next generation of
students. Not just the techniques, everyone with a Dan rank is a competent
technician, that's the very essence of 1st Dan. They're trying to learn the
things that allow the tradition to carry on, not just how to throw a punch
or how to drop your center of gravity during a leg sweep.

The advantage the SCA has is that you don't have to have your Master's
degree or your 3rd or 4th degree black belt to hook up with someone to
teach you to build the future of the society. You have to have the desire,
skill and interpersonal skills to find a teacher willing to pass on more
than just how to bevel a piece of glass so the lead sticks properly.

There's nothing wrong with being a student. There's nothing inherently
better with being a Peer. You can be both at once.
Within the ethos of our
modern SCA, being a PSA is more of a calling than an educational
experience.

I am curious about something. I was apprenticed / proteged [...]

But I did not seek them out. They approached me and said they felt I had
reached a level which would benefit from direct tutelage. I was rather
surprised they thought so, and I was honored they sought me out.

I have always assumed this was the way it was done everywhere. They choose
you and it would simply never have occurred to me to seek them out and ask
to be taken on as an apprentice or protege.

Is that an accepted practice? Does the apprentice/protege usually
initiate the conversation here? I know the squires do it all the time,
but that is somehow quite different to my mind.

I think it depends on the Laurel/Pelican. I know one Laurel who WILL NOT
ask. I think at this point, that rule has so firmly reached the status of
unshakeable law that she feels she can no longer make an exception. It has
become slightly absurd even, because when she wanted one of my friends as an
apprentice, and my friend wasn't catching on to the broad hints, the Laurel
in question eventually sent over a mutual friend to TELL my friend to ask,
if she was at all interested in being this laurel's appentice.

I also know one or two laurels who, while not offended by being asked,
prefer to do the approaching, because they can take the potential rejection
of being turned down better than they can deal with having to disappoint
someone who looks up to them enough to ask, but that they don't feel is
quite the right fit for that kind of relationship, for whatever reason.

My laurel just dropped really really REALLY big hints during a conversation
about my ceremony for joining her household, until I finally looked at her
askance, and asked her if she wanted me to ask or was she just trying to see
if I was interested.

Speaking of advice...

''what were/would you looking for from the relationship? What do/did you want and what does/did your Peer want?''

Again, depends, in this case very much on the person who wants to be an
apprentice/protege.

Are you very independent and self-directed, but get distracted and don't
always finish what you start? You may just need someone to guide you in the
right direction when you're lost, and boot you in the butt occasionally when
you wander off on some tangent.

Are you scattered and overwhelmed by choices? You may need someone to
layout a path for you, or help you lay out one; someone to help you narrow
down your choices to something manageable.

Are you pretty much sure of exactly where you want to go and how to get
there, and disciplined enough to do it? You may not need a Laurel/Pelican
at all. And the rest of us will look at you with envy and a sneaking sense
of fear. ;) ...but you probably just need someone to cheer you on when
things go well, cheer you up when they don't and occasionally point out
things you may have missed, or should watch out for.

Do you want it to be a strictly mentor/student relationship? Or also
friendship? Just in the SCA, or also mundanely?

Personally, I mostly fall in the first category of people-types. I have
never had difficulty finding something to do that interests me, and am more
than capable of going out and doing it without prompting. In fact, I really
ought to remember to actually tell my Laurel what I'm up to more often.
Which I'll probably have to do now, since I think she's on this list. :)

My biggest problem is that I'm easily bored and distracted and get excited
by too many things, I'm not really scattered but my SCA to-do list is
currently about 40-50 projects long, ranging from things that just need few
final adjustments and finishing, to passing ideas I really want to do but
haven't the time for right now. In fact, my list is so long occasionally I
find a project I completely forgot I was even working on!

What I was looking for was someone who would cheer me on when I did stuff,
but who I could trust to give me an honest opinion on the results. Someone
who would remind me of projects I should finish sooner rather than later
(when I'm not in school and putting all SCA stuff on hold anyway), make
suggestions of projects she thinks I could do, that I may not have thought
of, or thought might be beyond me and suggest solutions or suggest where I
might find them when I get stuck on something.

I also wanted it to be a two-way relationship. I was looking for someone who
wasn't just a mentor who helped me along in my chosen endeavors, but someone
who was also a friend. Someone who was willing to be actively involved in
my projects, and sometimes asked me to be involved in theirs.

I even got something I didn't know I was also looking for; someone who,
besides being my mentor and friend in the SCA, was also a friend who
wouldn't mind me sitting at her kitchen table and kvetching about
man-troubles, or describing school projects so excitedly that normal people
can't listen fast enough to hear, and she actually understands what I'm
talking about. Because you can never have too many of those.

This is such a great question, because trying to explain something to
someone else helps clarify it in your own head! Thank you!

* Said Laurel needs be flexible of mind, capable of giving constructive
criticism and a well placed boot to the butt when procastinative
tendencies take hold.
* The Laurel in question ideally will be a fibre addict, have an interest
in many periods, and have a high tollerence for puns and other forms of
wittisisms.
* The Laurel should live near Lions Gate or be willing to travel within
reason for purpose of regular meetings.

Well not speaking as a Laurel or Pelican, but as one of those other peers, I
would say I've seen it done both ways.

Me personally? I consider it the first test of any squire I would consider.
If they don't have the Caljones to come up and open discussions with me on
the subject, then they probably wouldn't do well as my squire. I cut a wide
swath sometimes and being associated with me means you are not going to be
able to skate by as a wallflower. ;-)

As uncomfortable as this sounds, it's very much like dating. (Which, BTW, one
should NEVER do. I've never once seen a situation where dating a student or
squiring your wife turned out well).

But in a non-romantic way, you are forming a long term bond that is in all
other ways very much like dating/marriage.

There really is no better analogy I can think of.

Couple of things to think about from Dame Tamlyn.

Laurels tend to keep an eye out at Artisans' Displays (Kingdom and local
level:-) and tend to gravitate towards those displays which are one of their
areas of interest or in which they may be interested in learning more about.

Apprenti don't necessarily have the same exact interests as their Laurels -
when I contract to someone I "by the best means I can teach and instruct or
cause to be taught and instructed" of course a requirement I have of them is
that they "shall not haunt disreputable taverns, nor playhouses, nor gamble
such to cause loss and absent myself thereby from my mistress' service".-}

I've approached someone who originally was most strongly interested in
scribal matters, but who is now more interested in archery... I won't know
as much as him, but I'll certainly learn along the way and put him in
contact with those he can learn from when we enter into contract.

It is far more important from the personal perspective that the relationship
be with someone you can get along with and who can get along with you...
Take an opportunity or several to talk with a Laurel who may be interested
in what you're interested in... If nothing else it will make them easier to
approach if you do decide you want to ask them if they would enter into a
Laurel-Apprentice relationship, though several Laurels I know (including
myself) will start with "student" relationships to see if they will work out
(for a variety of reasons:-} before upgrading to an apprentice relationship.

I've found that usually the reason a Laurel doesn't take on such
relationships is that 1) they are getting used to being a Laurel - probably
shouldn't ask for a relationship in their first year until they get their
feet under them, 2) they may feel that they can't adequately fulfill your
specific needs, 3) they already have enough relationships in the works that
they are unsure they can take anymore on without current relationships
suffering, and 4) they have a set manner in which they take on apprentices
or types of apprentices - this is harder to figure out and works along the
lines of deciding whether you should be asking them or whether they will be
asking you. Most people don't do well with cold calls so I would recommend
finding out all you can about a particular Peer before approaching them -
sort of like finding out what you can about a business you are interested in
working for BEFORE you interview:-}.

There aren't enough active Laurels in the kingdom to take on many more
apprentices than are already in service. There's a limit to how many of them
any Laurel can handle at a time and do a good job of it, so my Laurel
friends tell me. And I believe them.

It's not only time-consuming, it's a relationship wherein the peer and the
student have to get along well for it to be a productive use of time and
effort. That means knowing each other well before undertaking the
relationship in the first place. And that creates its own limits above and
beyond the Laurel's current number of apprentices.

An ''Arcuarius'' is a [[student]] who has been accepted by a member of the [[Order of the Grey Goose Shaft]] or OGGS. Arcuarius (Latin for archer; plural Arcuarii) is pronounced ar-koo-ar-EE-oos or plurally as ar-koo-AR-ee, but can often be heard pronounced as ar-KER-ee-us and ar-KER-ee-I, respectively. The normal practice is for a member of the OGGS to approach prospective candidates and invite them to become an Arcuarius. Arcuarii are the only people in An Tir permitted, by custom, to wear red bracers. Traditionally the major charge of the OGGS member is emblazoned on their Arcuarius' red bracer.

A student is someone who wishes to learn a specific skill set from someone, not necessarily a Peer. The teacher may set tasks before the student to assist that person in enhancing their skills, but there may not be fealty or a formal contract involved.

==Student as a relationship to a member of an Order==

In the SCA, "student" is typically used to describe someone in a defined learning relationship with a member of an order. An [[associate]] is a specific form of student to a member of a peerage order (Chivalry:squire, Laurel:apprentice, Pelican:protégé). Non-peerage students may have very similar learning and/or fealty relationships such as:
*Members of the [[Order of the Grey Goose Shaft]] take [[arcuarius]].
*Members of the Order of the [[White Scarf]] took [[cadet]]s, before the order was closed.
*Members of the Order of the [[Lion et de la Lance]] take [[Equerry]].

Some orders do not have a history of doing this in any formalized way, or do not have a name for the relationship if they do.

==Student as a less formalized Associate==

Another definition of student relates to Peers. Peers may take both [[associate]]s and students. In this case, students tend to be considered the "lite" version of an associate. There is generally no exchange of promises or oaths, and sometimes for only a set period ("a year and a day"). A Peer and an individual may also enter into a Peer-student relationship to see how well they do together before the student becomes a full associate.

Forms of Address

==Generally==

Gentlefolk are generally addressed by the title of their highest rank. Titles should not be "stacked" -- that is, you shouldn't use multiple titles when referring to a single person.

GOOD: "There goes Sir Joe, [[Baron]] of BigCity."<br>
BAD: "There goes [[Baron]] [[Sir]] Joe."

When a person is entitled to use more than one title, allow the circumstances to dictate which one gets used. If Sir Joe is also a member of the [[Order of the Laurel]] ("Master"), [[Baron]] of BigCity, and has been King once ("[[Count]]"), he could legitimately be called any one of the following:

* Sir Joe (on the fighting field)
* Master Joe (while teaching)
* Count Joe (when being announced into [[Court]])
* Baron Joe (when in his barony, or while holding baronial [[Court|court]])
* Sir Joe, Master of the Order of the Laurel, Baron of BigCity, Count of An Tir
* Count Joe, Knight of the Order of Chivalry
* etc

==Squires and Sergeants==

The terms sergeant, squire, protégé, apprentice, arcuarius, sergeant, courtier, yeoman and gallant describe various flavours of fealty relationships. These terms are
not titles and it's not appropriate to use them before a name.

If you want to mention that
someone is a squire/protégé/apprentice or sergeant/courtier/yeoman/gallant
you should say who they are in fealty to.

GOOD: "Joe Cannonfodder, squire to Duke Hammerhand"<br>
BAD: "squire Joe Cannonfodder"

GOOD: "Lord Joe Cannonfodder, sergeant to Baroness Esmeralda of Thisland"<br>
BAD: "sergeant Froderich Fronkensteen"

How can anyone know to tell His Grace Duke Hammerhand of the
deeds of courtesy his squire has performed if they don't know who
Cannonfodder is squired to?

==No awards==

Any gentle of any rank in the Society may be properly addressed as "my lord/milord" or "my lady/milady". This is especially useful if you don't know their rank. No gentle who bears awards or honours of any type should ever chastise another for using this form of address; better by far to explain the correct form of address, either for themself or a third party.

Examples:
* "Good day, milord."
* "My lady, you've dropped your handkerchief."
* "Milady Mary, come quick!"
* "My lord Joe is waterbearing."

Can sometimes be combined with someone's office or position:
* "Milord Cook, your feast was marvellous!"
* "Milady Herald, the King calls for you."

==Award of Arms==

Entitles the recipient to style him or herself "Lord" (note capital) or "Lady." They are properly addressed as "Lord (name)" or "Lady (name)." See also: [[Award of Arms]]

Examples:
* "Lord Joe made his own armor."
* "Would you ask Lady Mary if she has a large wooden spoon we can borrow?"

==Grant of Arms==

Title: The holders of Grants of Arms may style themselves ''Lord'' or ''Lady'', or in some areas, ''The Honourable Lord'' or ''The Honourable Lady.'' They may be addressed as ''Your Lordship'' or ''Your Ladyship.'' When referring to a person who has a Grant of Arms, you should use ''Lord/the Honourable Lord'' or ''Lady/the Honourable Lady'' instead of ''His/Her Lord/Ladyship.'' See also: [[Grant of Arms]]

Examples:
* ''The Honourable Lord Joe is our new shire Chirurgeon.''
* ''Here comes (optional: the Honourable) Lady Mary with a chest full of books. (to Mary) May I assist Your Ladyship?''
* ''Would Your Ladyship care to dance?''

Some other kingdoms apparently use ''The Honourable Joe'' or ''The Honourable Mary'' (without the Lord/Lady), but this does not appear to be the case in An Tir. Some research by Ursula Georges did find historical examples of this, in written form: ''The OED tells me that Shakespeare's Venus & Adonis was dedicated,'' To the Right Honorable Henrie Wriothesley, Earle of Southampton, and Baron of Titchfield. ''(source not provided)''

The abbreviation '''HL''' is often used incorrectly as part of a signature: "HL Betty Boop". The correct form would be "The Honourable Lady Betty Boop".

==Barons and Baronesses==

[[Baron|Barons and Baronesses]] come in two flavours: Court and Landed. Court Baronies are an honour granted by the Crown, while Landed Baronies represent and are responsible for a [[Barony]].

Both may use the title "Baron" or "Baroness" in front of their names. When you talk to them directly, they may be addressed as "Your Excellency". When you talk about them, they may be called "Baron Joe/Baroness Mary" or "His/Her Excellency".

Landed Barons and Baronesses: (Baron/ess of a barony) may also properly be addressed and referred to as "Baron/ess of [branch name]".

==Patent of Arms==

The holders of Patents of Arms are considered Peers. They may be subdivided into two categories: [[Royal Peers]], which are those gentles who have held royal rank at least once, and Peers of the Society, who are members of one of the four Great Orders.

The titles involved can be many and varied. When in doubt, don't forget that "My lord" and "My lady" are perfectly acceptable titles for anyone.

===Royal Peers===

Royal Peers are those who:
* Have reigned at least once as Prince or Princess of a Principality. Their title is [[Viscount|Viscount/Viscountess]], and they are addressed as "Your Excellency".
** Example: "Your Excellency, this is Lord Ken. Lord Ken, this is Viscountess Mary."
** Example: "Get in armour, quick! Viscount Joe is holding the field against all comers!"
* Have reigned once as King or Queen of a Kingdom. They are called [[Count|Count/Countess]] and are addressed as "Your Excellency".
** Example: "Your Excellency, the meeting is starting. (to page) Tom, would you carry Countess Mary's chair to the meeting please?"
** Example: "Count Joe is teaching needlepoint this afternoon. (to Count Joe) Your Excellency, would there room for one more in your class?"
* Have reigned twice or more as King or Queen of a Kingdom. They are called [[Duke|Duke/Duchess]] and are addressed as "Your Grace".
** Example: "One lump or two, Your Grace? (to server) Please take this tea to Duke Joe."
** Example: "According to the roster, it's Duchess Mary's turn to do the dishes. (to Duchess Mary) Your Grace, the water is almost hot."

Peers of the Society are members of:
* The [[Order of Chivalry]];
** Members of the [[Order of Chivalry]] come in two flavours: Knights and Masters. (For an explanation of the differences, see [[Order of Chivalry]].) Knights are addressed as "Sir (name)", Masters as "Master (name)".

==Royalty==

Royalty of the Society are either:
* The reigning King and Queen. They are referred to as "The Crown", "The Sovereign and Consort" or "The King and Queen". Note that The Sovereign is the person who won Crown Tourney, and may be either the King or the Queen. They are addressed together as "Their Royal Majesties", or individually as "Your Royal Majesty". Sometimes just "Your Majesty" is used less formally.
* The heirs to the throne, the Crown Prince and Princess. They are referred to as "The Coronet", "Their Highnesses" (singly "Your Highness") or "Their Royal Highnesses" (singly "Your Highness").
* The reigning Prince and Princess of a principality. They are referred to as "Their Highnesses" (singly "Your Highness").
* The heirs to the principality thrones/coronet. They are addressed as "Your Excellencies" (singly "Your Excellency"), and in An Tir are known as the Tanist and ban-Tanist, or Tanist and Tanista, depending on the principality.

Note that sometimes regional descriptors are used when referring to royalty, to uniquely identify them when confusion might otherwise arise. For example, the Prince and Princess of the Summits are known as "Their Alpine Highnesses". A King of Ealdormere would be "Your Lupine Majesty". In An Tir, "The Sable Lion Thrones" is sometimes used to refer to the crown in the third person. Ciaran AEstel reported that "Some past scroll texts refer The Sable Lion and Lioness, but we haven't generally used regional descriptors for the Kingdom."

On other Kingdoms, it is sometimes a custom for those who have sworn fealty to The Crown to use "My Liege" in place of "Your Royal Majesty", but this does not seem to be a custom of An Tir.

Also, often heard used by the royalty (or other nobility) to refer to their equals in other kingdoms/principalities/baronies. For example, the baron of Wyewood might refer to "their cousins in Aquaterra", meaning the Baron and Baroness of Aquaterra.

Constable

Formerly, this described an event safety person and/or branch officer. Not known throughout the Known World, constables often maned the event gate, and provided wandering patrols through the evening to maintain site security and safety. "Walking constab" described the act of paroling the site during an event, normally with radios to provide contact with the head of constabulary, or their deputy. Such volunteers were refereed to as "the watch" or "rovers".

The symbol of the constables was Azure, a Mace Bendwise Or. Often this was worn as a badge on a baldric, to be temporarily used by rover volunteers.

The main functions of constables included:
:keeping an eye out for unattended fires
:providing a presence to deter crime
:helping locate lost children (or parents)
:passing messages via radio
:working with and assisting the police or local security

Constables were not supposed to do anything forcibly, but rather just watch, talk, and call the local police if needed.

The sixth edition of the An Tir Constables Handbook was published in March, 2002. A newer version was in the works around 2006. At some point around 2007, the office of the Constabulary was suspended and subsequently eliminated, and constable patrols ceased.

Coat of Arms

All SCA members should endeavor to work with their local heralds to design their own unique and historically appropriate arms or device. Branches, principalities, and kingdoms also have their own arms (which must include a laurel wreath), and may also have a populace [[badge]].

A personal [[Coat of Arms|device]] says "This is me." A [[badge]] says "This is mine."

Note that you don't need and [[Award of Arms]] to have or register a device. It's just that once you are awarded arms, your device becomes your arms. In a practical sense, they are no different - they just get an additional name.

In Heraldry, a coat of arms is:
:unique - one design for one individual or family historically (individuals only in the SCA)
:heraldic - follows the design rules of heraldry
:display - on a shield, tabard or surcoat

As part of an heraldic achievement, it's on a shield/escutcheon, with a helmet, supporters, and motto.

Bardic Circle

A gathering of people with the intention of performing songs, stories, poems, etc. and sharing them with an audience. Audience members as well as performers are always very welcome.

Bardic Circles can often be found at many events, especially larger events. They will often occur in the evening around a large campfire designated for the purpose. They may also be hosted in the camp of a household. Normally, the start time and location of a bardic circle will be listed in the site copy.

For all of who have being playing in the S.C.A. for some time I have
some Tragic news. I am sorry to share the news this way but I don't
have phone numbers for all who would wish to know. My Knight and
really good friend Sir Wulfhere the Capacious was killed last night
about 6 P.M. in a head-on collision.

If anyone needs to get in contact with Lady Angelique at this time
please call *me* as she is very distraught and is not accepting phone
calls. I know many of us will want to offer sympathies and
condolences and I will let you know how to send those. I will pass
on the info about the arrangements as they become available. At this
time it looks like Friday or Saturday for the services but nothing
has yet been finalized.

As Wulfhere had many friends in the whole Kingdom would some one be

Today we must say goodbye to a very dear friend. Ron Brown (known in the SCA as Ragnulf Bjarnisson and also as The Bead Man) passed away this evening.

Those of us who were blessed with his friendship will miss him very much. His kindness and warm sense of humour will always be remembered.

We will mourn the passing of a very sweet and gentle man.

Lord Elder Odli Goodwater, along with his lady [[Mercedes]], passed from this world in a tragic plane accident on July 8, 2003. The plane went missing on a flight from Golden, BC to Calgary, AB. The wreckage was found by a hanglider pilot later on.

Odli was known for many things in the SCA; Bardic & Brewing being the ones that most people remember the best. Those people who called him friend remember him for his kind spirit, his sharp wit, & his willingness to do anything for someone he loved. I know that I and many others will continue to miss him for the rest of our days. When he passed, he took a piece of The Dream with him, a piece that can never be put back in place.

Even though it has been years since he left us, whenever I think of him I still start to weep. I hope these emotions never leave me, for it shows what an amazing impact this person had on me & my life. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten. I will ensure that.
